For all the naysayers on the compatibilty of RCCs and straight freshwater tanks. I've had mine in pure fresh for over two years, and he's done wonderfully. That said I'm neurotic on water quality...
He eats pond snails, ghost shrimp, anachris (not that I want him to...), algae wafers, and flakes that make it to the bottom. He gets occasional treats like cooked shrimp and raw fish. He also eats ALOT of wood (his claw marks can be seen up and down the length of the pieces I have in there).
A couple of weeks ago after my RCC molted he had an unfortunate accident and lost 2 legs and one claw. He recovered well and nubs could be seen where the limbs were regrowing.
He molted last night and though the new claw has a darker color than the bright red of the old one, his limbs are easily 80% the size of the ones he lost, and he looks great. He's sticking to the above water part of the tank (as he always does after molt to avoid the crayfish which is much larger than him).
I've heard all kinds of advice on these little guys (from that they need brackish water to they can't be kept alive for long in any aquarium setting), just thought I'd share my story to rebut all of the disinformation I've read on them. Unquestionably he's become one of my favorites.
