One thing I thought about in the meantime Veneer, I have alot of plants in my tank (OK, ALOT ALOT). I have seen my crab eating some of these (anachris, sedge, and something that looks like coontails). The tank also contains some old seashells and snails which he also eats at (calcium for moulting). Maybe a balanced diet is the important factor? I feed him algae flakes (tiny bits broken off), fish flakes, shrimp (cocktail shrimp & ghosts), bits of fish... and that's about it. He eats the snails and plants on his own.
Graysilm, you're talking about fiddler crabs, called one armed bandits due to the males having one oversized claw. Some LFS sell these as redclaws not knowing the difference. I've never owned any, but I think they're less able to acclimate to FW.
