Red Clawed Shrimp

I've kept mine with the following, without any unusual deaths,

Mollies, guppies, Mystery snails, MTS, Ramshorn snails, RCS, Bamboo shrimp, Macrobrachium kulsiense, Cherax quadricarinatus (with pleennnty of room, I don't recommend this), Ghost shrimp, and Amano shrimp.

Make sure that there is plenty of food, and that your Red Claw population does not over grow, causing fighting between adult males.

Holy cow! Wow, yours is huge! I guess mine does have a long way to go. They must live for a long time, because I've had him for several months and while he and the others have gotten bigger, judging from your picture he still has a long way to go. Did I get them from you? It's been a while I don't actually remember where I got them from now that I think about it.

Bill,

You can divide a 10g tank into two breeding territories, with two alpha males and two to three adult females per alpha male. The juveniles will not be bothered much, but I use grow-out or nursery tanks to rear my Red Claw shrimp in. The nursery tanks have multiple fake plants to provide perches for the shrimp to use, and not bother each other.

The breeder tanks have PVC pipes for caves.

Tennesseemom,
My alpha male shrimp get to be approximately 3 inches long (not including the claws). I have never witnessed a fight between males that resulted in a death, or the loss of limb. However, I try to keep adult populations under control.

Other Macrobrachium species are extremely violent (M. rosenbergii), and others are as docile as RCS (M. kulsiense). If you were to rate M. rosenbergii as 10 for aggression, and M. kulsiense as 1, Red Claw shrimp would rate around 3, in my opinion. I have some that I've trained to feed from my hand, and I've never been pinched.

I just came home to find one of mine curled up and dead. I believe he may have been harmed or at least given a frickin heart attack while we were chasing down my GAE's and Pleco that I re-homed the other night. Water parameters test fine and my Alpha male is still good.

Pixl8r, I may be in touch with you regarding obtaining some of these in the coming week. I want to get some more cover for them first though before then.

Mavisky,
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. IMO, stress is the top killers of tank dwelling shrimp. I've found that species specific, or at least invertebrate specific tanks are the way to go with shrimp.

If anyone is interested, I've got more pictures of my shrimp here;
