LFS told me that they got a red dat in and I should come check it out.
One look and I knew... it was a mangrove jack also called a Mangrove red snapper.
It was about an inch long.

Grows to a length of 150cm or almost 60" (5').

cool fish... but damn do they ever get big.
i prefer the true datnoids/coius or whatever you like to call them.

In nature, or public aquarium. They live up to 18 - 20 years.
I sent a better picture of what it looks like.

I also have more pictures of adults and the teeth they have.

nice colors!

i want to find some mangroves for my brackish tanks.

lets see some teeth!! :)

Rarely will you find anyone that will be able to house a fish that adult size properly. The fish was better off left where they found it. :(

Don't just assume that the Shedd will have an extra huge empty tank for a giant fish that will eat almost anything that lives with it.

PS, I live in Chicago too!

Yes, I agree.
I know Shedd isn't looking for hand-outs (as in fish) because it cost to keep them.
I live right across the lake from Chicago.
I always do my homework (research) before I do anything.
Well, I am also finding out that the Mangrove Snapper that is native to the US is different Lutjanus griseus, Grey snapper also called the Mangrove Snapper and the Lutjanus cyanopterus
Cubera snapper are all very similar.
Hummm!
Well, there goes that idea of release.
