red devil and midas cichlid

good question

In SoCal, i've never seen a Midas at a LFS. Anything big with a coloration near red is called a red devil

how can u tell the diffrence between a red devil and midas cichlid?
a red devil is like a dull pinkish orange color. A midas is more of a redish orange. And also, as juveniles, a midas has more of a protruding pair of lips. Im sorry hollybull, but I have to disagree with you

Here is an article that compares the two, and shows the possible diversity further complicating the matter. http://www.cichlidae.com/article.php?id=106

I think that most of us would be dependent on the seller's id especially with juveniles. My lfs, refers to their order sheets when in doubt wich lists genus species names as well as common, but still that's only as good as the person that prepared it.

I believe red devils have the more protruding fleshy lips compared to their Midas cousins.

devils have a much more narrow face than a midas. Looking at them from a top view.
