My Red devil is currently in a 40 gall0n tank. would it do ok ia an outdoor pond. I live in michigan but i would only put him in there during the spring/summer seasons. Thanx RJ

i wouldnt recommend it at all. even during the summer months. however, if youre gonna do it, you might want to test the water temp. of the pond during the summer.
plus i dont know how acidic the rain can be, nor how often it rains but, a change in the ph of the pond can affect a fish no native to the region.

In stark contrast to CichlidSickness' response, I would say that keeping your Red Devil in a pond over the summer is an excellent idea. As long as the temp stays around 75+ the Labiatus should do great and develope brighter coloration and thicker lips. I've recently setup a 3000g pond and will be keeping 10+ Red Devils in it this summer.
I agree with Rare. Gives it the natural way of life. I have a 6000 gallon pool im gonna set up as an indoor pond heated during winter and it will store the fish I plan to put into a 4000 gallon outdoor pond some time in the future during the summer months. Most likely a few jags or doviis.
I got a 9" male growing out in the Koi pond. He is doing great. I did the same with a RD/midas 5 years ago. He is 15" long now.
I've done it with festivum and Hemichromis fasciatus, and they loved the extra elbow room. Much more like their life in the wild to have a territory that isn't squished into a small glass box.
lol, no harm done. But just make sure you have no cats around the pond along with anything else offensive. Those red swimmies in the pond may attract a kitty. (I have had some bad history with our cats and our koi in our pond lol)
Cats schmatz, the raccoons are the problem. The worst was the night a mother came to teach her kids to fish in my girlfriend's lily pond. By the way, they don't back down!
lol your right, one time I tried to fend our trashcans off to rid some raccoons so I got out the paintball gun and the little son of a guns wouldent back down!!! lol
