Whew I just did battle with my rd. Trying to do tank maint. He kept biting me, it didnt hurt but man. Talk about defending his territory. He even attacked the python. I finally had to corner him at one end of the tank while my wife used the net to keep him there I wonder what it will be like when he's full grown.

Yeah...I know that feeling. My midas will find a way...any way to bite my hand. He hasn't succeeded...and don't plan to let him (he is 10"+). I was just trying to wipe the edge of the tank where the water level was. He came up to the top of the tank and bite the sponde (thank goodness not my hand).

Aren't cichlids grand? I used to have my husband use the big net to fend off my 12" midas when we first got him. I wasn't sure if he'd attack me or not and didn't want to find out. But, I've gotten used to him the last 2 years. He's only bitten me twice, drew blood once. I stick the python in first and then run to turn on the water. By the time I'm ready to clean, he's taken all his nastiness out on the hose.
My BP, on the other hand. Woo! She just about chawed my hand off the other day when I was cleaning. She drew blood in 3 different places.

After keeping him cornered I thought he would be stressed and go hide. Nothing could be farther from truth. He went straight for the python and ran the jd out of his side of the tank. But on the opposite I have almost got him to take pellets from my fingers. As soon as I lift the tank lid he is there waiting to be fed. Cool fish!

My Midas attacks the siphon (python) like it was his worst enermy. He recognizes my footsteps. Before I entered the room, he was at the corner waiting for me :D Each morning he greets me with his tail flapping...swimming back and forth. :) Gotta love tankbuster like this fella. ;)

My midas' tank is right by the front door and he is always right there at that end of the tank, waiting for me with "kisses." Whenever I leave the room, he swims to that side of the tank and watches until I'm out of sight. What a sweetheart, huh? That's why his name is Sweetie. :)

The feeding ritual; He is pig when I go to feed him, he's right there and nobody gets any pellets but him. So what I started doing is feeding him first and then wait. With a full belly he swims to his hiding spot to chill.
So then I have to sneek up on the tank without him seeing me. I very slowly raise the lid and dump in some pellets. This is the only way the jack and convict get anything. Now this is a 6 foot tank and his spot is on the opposite end from where the jd and con hang out. But as soon as he see them eating bam he is over there in an instant.
A couple of times he has thrown a fit when he didnt gat anything. He starting shaking and raming the side of the tank. I was worried he would hurt himself, but after the fit he chased the poor jack all over the tank.
This is by far the coolest fish I have ever owned. He's always up to something. Oh yea earthworms as a treat forget it nobody even gets close to them.

Just gotta love these guys. :D I can't clean the tank without him having a fit. Each time I vacuum the tank...mess up his gravel (those he digged), he would attack the siphon in no end.

If I didn't pay attention to him when he needed it, he would swim all the way up with his hump out...then swam really fast down...splashed water and made sounds to draw my attention. If I continued to ignore him, he would carry the fake silk plant around the tank banging it against the glass.
