Hello all. This is a great forum, it has already helped us a lot.

We have a 90 gal reef tank, with 60 lb LR and 60 lb LS. Fish include a blue damsel, 2 false percula clowns, a yellow tang, lawnmower blenny, 6 stripe wrasse, and 3 pajama cardinals, and assorted cleaners. Inverts include 1 leather and a zoo.

We are having a bout with Red Slime. We've treated once with ChemiClean, and did a 15 Gal water change after 48 hr. Afterward I noticed the Ph had dropped to 7.8, so I added buffer. Other parameters are SG=1.020, Ammonia and Nitrites are 0, Nitrates about 15-20.

Since then, the clowns haven't been doing well. They acted very lethargic and stopped eating. They've perked up a lot recently, but still won't eat. Everybody else is doing fine (except the zoo, which the slime almost killed).

The Red Slime is coming back, and I need to treat again, but I'm afraid the clowns won't take it. I don't know if it was the chemicals, or the low PH. What should we do? I don't want the slime to get more of a foothold.

Thanks for your help.

I'm no expert but as far as i know Its cyanobacteria. increase your circulation, maybe point powerheads at it. it may be flourishing because nitrates are to high, but ill leave this for the pros.

Update: Help!

Well, one of the clowns died this morning. The other still won't eat. I don't think he'll last long. Any ideas how to get him to eat?

Everybody else is still doing fine. I'll wait as long as I can, but I'll need to treat again soon.

Do you use tap water? The algae could be due to a high phosphate count.

What have you been feeding the clowns? Do you have a QT tank? Are your nitrites, -ates, an ammonia still good? The more info you can give us, the easier we can reply.

And welcome to AC! :thm:

We're using RO water (store bought), and the parameters are still good. Ph back up to 8.2, and NO3 around 15ppm. I don't have a phosphate test kit, so I don't know that exactly. No QT either.

We've been feeding a combination of flake food and brine shrimp. Bought some Mysis shrimp and have been feeding that now too, but that was after the clowns stopped eating.

What is your water flow-rate? IME(in my expierience) just incresing the flow rate to around 20x turn over per hour is enough to wipe out a great deal of cyano.

I'm also pretty sure I read somewhwere that feeding flakes can add to your phosphates.

Flow rate should be ok. Our main filter pump is 1200 GPH, and we have a powerhead on each end (can't remember their size right now).

You may be right on the overfeeding, we're cutting back.
