Hi, I recently got my first ever aquarium, its only 10g. I looked up some fish and picked a red tail shark, the website said he would reach 3-4 in. but i've seen other sites now that say he could grow to 6in. Will he survive in this tank? I want to add 2 blue rams if i could....would that work out? Any advice would be appriciated, thanks.

Agreed, a 30g minimum (50g is better) for a red tail shark, if it were me I would return him. If the tank is cycled I would replace him with something more suited to the tank eg a dwarf gourami and some danios.

In my opinion 10g is a bit small for rams, but others may disagree.

I dont think a red tail shark would get along with Rams. Maybe try it out in a 30g or 33long. In a ten you could house 3 Rams at the most and a Otto but a 15g would be much better.

The red tails iv had in the past have gotten to 4-5 inches in a 20 gal. there swimmers and prefer larger setups, like posted a couple of rams would be OK for your 10.....:)

ive heard the RTS will eat on the the slime coat of other fish has any one witnessed this behavior?

Thanks for the advice everyone. This redtail has really grown on me already. Maybe I can upgrade to a bigger tank in a year or so? I'm not sure how fast he grows. Would being in a 10 gallon for the beging of his life stunt his growth forever, or just till he is in something bigger?

Mine went from a baby to full size in about a year if I remember right... it grew fast and got fat fast.

No, I doubt it would stunt his growth

In all honesty, 20 gallon tanks aren't very expensive at all. And the filter on the 10 could be used on the 20 and the same for the heater. IDK if the light fixture is the same... but you could build something if it came down to it.

Just a thought... it wouldn't take long to save up money for it.
