hi all, i have 4 red zebras, one male, and 3 females. the male is trying to spawn with females but the females just run away. the male is abt 2-3 inches and females ranging between 2-2.5 inches. also, i saw a female digging under a rock today. is that normal? i turn off lights at night. does that help at all?

If there was a female diggin.. she could be nesting. I would wait a week or too..

Still I am not a pro with African.. And I believe you are speaking of metriaclima? And they are mouth Brooders I believe... Still spawning sites I believe are dugg or in hidden area.

Welcome to AC !

You have them in exactly the right ratio - you can see how with just one female he would chase and harass them potentially to death.

The digging behaviour is very normal.

Presuming good water conditions and correctly stocked tank you will find it impossible to avoid having fry. What are they in with and what size tank ?

i actually have a 55g and a 29g. i used to have red zebras in 55g but recently i have transfered only the zebras into 29g. i do 10% water change every week so i guess the 29g should do fine for some time. the male cichlid is about 2.5-3inches and females are 2-2.5inches. this is the first time i am trying for fry. i am so excited. i dont know why but the females are so scared of the male and wont get together.

your fish are still young give them time they should be able to work it out soon usually the female will be ready when she is in the right mind frame to breed but until your females are ready he will harass them and a 29gal is sorta small space for them usually a female will seek out a male in the wild and signal him that she is interested breed than leave and do her thing..

Luckly my male red zebra doent harass my female red zebra very much. I guess the male is distracted by the other africans in my tank.
I have 1 male red zebra about 2.5'', 1 female red zebra 2.25'' and 1 small red zebra about 1-1.25'' with other africans in a 55g ranging in size from 1.25'' to 3''. I just removed female red zebra and put in in a 20g while it is holding again. This will be her 2nd set of fry. The female had moved gravel under some rock work were u can see glass at bottom, were it planned to hide and release fry at some point i guess.
