The substrate is small pea gravel now, approx. 3 inches deep.
I changed a week after went to S/A's because I had a crushed coral mix to help PH and hardness with the africans, and I also thought about what you just said.
The tank is very accessible now, only some plastic plants, a few pieces of petrified wood and three resin "stumps".
When I vac. now I get all the way to the bottom of the entire tank without much trouble. Before, to do the same thing was a major deal as far as moving all the rocks around to get under them. In fact, I have to admit to losing a couple fish because of doing it that way.
