I just setup a tank and I was hoping to raise a few angelfishes; however, when I tested my water the hardness was very high (around 300). Can anyone tell me an effective way to soften the water besides having to buy distilled water or going out and installing a water softening system. I heard that there are kits to do so but i'm not sure.

You could add some driftwood to the tank...malaysian is good. That helps to soften the water a bit. I would try that first and see how much it moves your readings. If you can get it down to a decent level that way that would be good.......er wait........hhm...not sure, maybe it's PH that driftwood effects ??...dang, now I can't remember.....lol....I have VERY soft water so have never had to worry about that issue..

But I do know that peat softens water....you can buy peat pillows that go into the filter....

I have had the same problem and just through my personal findings it is best to take all the SMALL steps you can and leave it as is. Get some driftwood and mix your water changes with 50/50 tap water- distilled water, your fish will adapt if they havent already adapted in your local fish store. Major changes to bring your hardness down have the potential to do more damage to your fish than good....but again, this is just from my personal findings.
