hey guys, i'm still in debate with myself on how i should set up my tank... as of right now, i've got a 55gal tank, and stand... i say this is all i have because i want a reef tank, and i know i'll need much better lighting than what i have, and possibly better filtration... oh, i got offered 70 lbs of liverock for 50 bucks, so "HECK YEAH!"... ok, on to my questions..

wow, where to start... we all know i want a reef system. my question is if that's all i want, nothing but corals/polyps and the "cleaner crew", or do i want fish with it? i've tried thinking about what kind of fish i'd have, but not really any luck... everything i want is either too much or too little... too much would be an example such as this : yellow tang, ocellaris clown, 3 green chromis, diamond watchman goby... i would absolutely love to have these fish, but i've been told to immediately take the tang off because they get too big, and will run out of swimming space.. and as for the others, the bioload is too much for the berlin filter method that i plan on (i think its the berlin; liverock, lights, and protein skimmer as the main method of filtration??) my idea of "too little", would be a single fish... i'd like just a single fish because of simplicity, but i feel like it wouldn't be noticed in such a big tank. my ideas for a single fish is either a mandarin dragonet, or a dogface puffer...

so what do you guys think? if i do opt for the "too much" fish setup, could i get by with a canister filter? i'm stuck once again with a "too little/too much" delimma on filtration... what i want and what i've got is too little (either the berlin system or a HOB that i already have)... and too much is a sump, that everyone tells me i need... no matter how many people tell me that is what i need, i just don't think so... it just seems like too much of a setup hassle to be able to enjoy the rest of the tank... that's why i think a canister filter is a happy medium...

Hiya Twan...just been reading through your quandry...

Well, i dont see any reason why you should not have a pair of clowns..They would be a great addition to your system, the goby would be fine also, a beautifull fish...Removal of the tang, i totally agree...

Filtration wise, provided you have enough in there, your live rock and sand will provide the filtration..I started off with a filter on my system, but after advice i removed all the media and just use it for circulation, never looked back be honest..

Sump tanks are not really a " You Must Have To Keep A Reef " item, they are an added bonus because of all the extra benefits that it provides for you..I know quite a few reefers who have beautifull reefs and do not have sumps..

alright thanks for clearing up the filter question... so what about a pair of clowns, the diamond goby, and 3 green chromis? that way, i'll have 6 fish, which means a lot of movement... oh, and with the 70 lbs of LR, how much LS should i add? about 80 lbs, right?

Yes, you should be just fine with them fish that you have listed, but i would not go anymore than that..

On sand...You dont have to buy all live sand. Buy some aragonite based play sand from your local home depot or Lowes and then find a local reefer or lfs and get them to give you a couple of cups of sand from an existing tank and spread this out over your new sand..

How much sand? well, it depends if you going for a deep sand bed or not..a lot of people only really go for about 2 inch sand bed..about 80lbs would be fine..

but i thought the playsand had some bad stuff in it? back when i had hermit crabs, i was in the forums, and people were asking about using store-bought playsand, and they were saying that there could be some bacteria and stuff that would kill the crabs... but this may be the type of sand that you see sitting out in the open... but i guess the play sand you're talking about comes in bags maybe?

There is no need to have to treat any play sand that you buy for starting up a new aquarium, just wash it properly ( some people dont even do that ) and it will be just fine for you..

If you search through the forums, you will find lots of long standing reefers who use play sand from places like lowes or home depot and just get a couple of cups of live sand from your lfs or fellow reefer to start the bacteria off...

I dont see the point i going out and buying all the bags of "Live Sand" and paying premium cost, when you can do it for a quarter of the price and it will be just as effective, which is proven to work just great..
