As i read these forums i see so much about live rock.

some say you can make live rock, but i havent found any info on the typ of rock required. Can i make Lava rock in to Live rock ? Or , Beach rocks , big ones i dont mean small rocks.

can i make live rock and how ? The Lava rock i have has been in a cichlid tank for like 2 years. is the idea to get algae to grow to make the rock live ?

I am converting my 30 gall from fresh to salt. i am doing it slowly , so i dont kill off any bio help.

any answers would be appreciated. i have read so much stuff i am dizzy. lol

lava rock can be used in a reef tank, however, some of them contain a lot of heavey metals so it usualy isnt suggested and sometimes ends in a disaster, but if you have had it in freshwater for so long, it should be okay.
it will, as well as all other rock (however, not all is safe.... iw ouldnt use anything cute natural coral skeleton or CaCO3) will eventualy become live rock. if you put it in your tank, the bacteria will grow on it and it will become live. however, to make it peltiful of the usual hitchickers such as sponges, pods, coraline algae, etc, etc, etc, you need to add some actual live rock in to seed it.
rocks form the beach are also not usualy suggested. it is illegal in many parts, and could easily contain pollutants.
you can make your own using certain cements and crushed coral or oyster shells also.
also, i dont understand what you are saying about converting it to saltwater slowly. no matter how slowly you do it, you will kill the bacteria from your freshwater tank by adding salt and you will have to cycle over again. i think that is what you were saying?

tuffa rock makes vey good bas erock its poris and cheap in a few month it will look like you boughtfrom a store but make sure you buy some live rock to seed the tuffa

hey

Thanks so much for the info. Glad i got alot of lava rock.

the reason i was converting it slowly was that i have puffers in it. they say to slowly raise the salt. now i am just gonna bring it up to full salt.

i have a penguin hob filter, what to do with it ? i hear emove bio whell, no media, any ideas ? I also have a small box filter in it, with gravel and fluff, should i get rid of this ? , i figured it gave me more water movement.

thanks again and apprecitate your help

hey

i think i got it.

my tank must be full saltwater to begin the salt cycle. then in time and some live rock added my lava rock will grow and become live rock. but no growin on rock till i am full salt or do some things grow on it until i reach full salt, then cycle. am i thinking correct ??

let me know

So you currently have a freshwater setup with puffers? Which type? Are you planning to use those to cycle to a full saltwater tank?

I dont believe there is a way to avoid the cycle though. Depending upon how much liverock you use to seed the regular rock you will probably go through a mini or full cycle even if you manage to increase the salt to marine life level.

And what current substrate do you have in your tank? Hopefully sand if you plan to convert to a full on saltwater tank. By changing your substrate you will definitely start another cycle.

hi

Yes i have sand as sub. and a puffer and scat i will use for the salt cycle.

Also i will use a penguin hob filter and a corner buble filter. Trying to get water flow. hopefully i get thru the cycle and all thing go well. The puffer deserves the cycle, i bought him wich lead to brackish and now i want salt. So the 1 out of 4 puffers i bought is now the cycle fish.

what light hours for cycle ? and the cycle starts when i reach full marine ?

thanx for the time

Sounds like things are coming together. And did you ever list what buffer it is? Is it the eight figure one? I don't think that will survive once you increase your salt concentration. One you hit a certain salt level he might die before you can even convert your tank to full salt. Which would make him useless for the cycling process.

I am not quite sure about the light hours. I would just do the normal 8-12 hours.
