Removing UG Filter during cycle?

For some odd reason I felt I should put an undergravel filter in my tank before I started it up for a fresh cycle and batch of fish. It's a 10 gallon tank and I already have a decent filter setup for it but I thought I could use some cleaner water. Well after doing some more reading and talking to people about UG filters I have concluded that it wasn't the best idea. I've only been cycling for about 3 days and haven't been able to measure any nitrite or nitrate buildup yet. Can I just yank the towers out of the filter and smooth the gravel over it? Would the void under the gravel cause any problems? Or should I just remove some water from the tank and try to pull the UG filter out without making too much of a mess?

No opinions/advice? I want to do this tonight... *sigh*

It would be best to totally remove it if you do not have plans to use it. Fish waste will build up under it and stagnate do to no circulation under the UGF. When you vaccuum the tank you will not be able to get at the waste under the UGF. You will end up with problems and end up having to pull it up later.
