I think I decided on a canister filter for my new setup. I've been reading reviews all day and this one seems to get very good overall reviews, apart from the hose being hard to put on. I'm wondering if this is the best canister filter I can get for the $100-$150 price range? If not any suggestions.
i would go with the Rena and another filter, just to be sure that you are not left with a huge unfiltered fish bowl if your filter quits on you.
i have a 55 gallon cichlid tank that has a Rena XP2 and a dual output topfin hob on it and that is starting to be not quite enough filtration as the fish are getting bigger, eating more, and making more waste.
i agree with 247, go with the next size up, then you won't have to upgrade like i am now needing to do......
I'd think a XP2 is kind of borderline for a 50G tank, especially if you have a lot of fish and even more so if they're of the messy species. I'd suggest going up to the next size (an XP3) and adding a second filter so you have redundancy in case one fails. An Aquaclear 70 would be good for that tank as a complement to the AC.
You're going to be investing a lot of money in the livestock, so you really want their water as clean as possible.
