Rena XP2 Problems

What do you pack you XP2 with?

-Sponges that come with the filter on bottom
-Nylon pot scrubbers in middle
-Floss square x 2 on the very top

I also try to keep a piece of Big Als blue sponge in the filter in case I have to start another tank. I can use the blue sponge as aquaclear HOB media or make a sponge filter.

Water parameters

Finally got around to posting these. Ammonia three days ago was 0ppm, and Nitrites 0ppm.
Water is still a bit cloudy, it's been a week.

Well, it's been over 2 weeks, water is still cloudy. I am starting to get frustrated, I thought I bought this canister filter because in theory it should be a better filter than the Penguin.
If my water parameters are good, why would my filter still be cycling?
Is is cloudy because the filter is stirring up debris?
Should I return the filter?

No. Don't return it. If your parameters are good it could be diatomic particles that are making your tank cloudy. Have you tried using Activated Carbon?

More filter floss in the filter might help too.

I have tried adding a couple extra layers of floss. The system came with a bag of Bio-Chem Zorb, that's supposed to help with diatomic particles?

Activated carbon removes diatomic particles to about .5 of a micron. It's also removes chemicals by binding them to the carbon. It might work. It's worth a try if you have it anyway.

If this is still a bacterial bloom, I'd do a few water changes also.

I just put an XP2 on my 30gal and Personally I love it. Is your flow on the spray bar still the lowest? I Found that my XP2 actually cleaned my water better that that of my AC50 that was on there. I actually replanted my whole tank the same night i put the XP2 on there so there was plenty of debris in the water and a few pieces of drift wood so plenty of tanis also....but the next morning i work to find the cleanest tank I have ever had. I have just the filter pads and carbon, plus the phos-sorb pad, bc of high phospates and silicates in my water at home. I would possibly try turning your spray bar wide open to keep from restricting flow through your filter. Thats the only thing that I can think of right now. I dont know why you would have any problems, i found that mine actually helped my problems. And i did as you and put part of the filter media from my AC50 in the XP2, but i did keep the AC50 running, just for extra support biologically, so that could be part of the problem.

Great post VTwinFanatic, I really can't think of anything else-it must be a bacterial bloom. I didn't run my previous filter like you did, you were smart.
ChefKeith-I've been doing the water changes once a week, I'll try your idea, I'll let you know, thanks.

It's been 3 weeks now, water is still hazy-not neccesarily cloudy, but definately not clear.
I have been running an additional Whisper internal(10 g filter) in the corner to help with additonal water movement. I have also threw in the Bio-Chem Zorb pouch. I lightly rinsed off the sponges, swapped out the floss for the Bio-Chem Zorb.
I really hope my tank clears up soon, I miss the days of crystal clear water that the Penguin gave me.
