I just picked one of these up with my new tank, never had a canister before, but was recommended by my LFS that I go with a cannister on a 90 gallon.

Anyone used these? Are they any good, so far it runs super quiet and using the powerjet outlet produces some nice current within the tank.

I run two on my 100GAL. They are great for the money and easy to clean and Maintain. You should think about running 2 of these on your 90 GAL.

Currently, it cycles the water every 30 minutes based on ratings, 2 would be every 15 minutes. Wouldn't 2 be overkill? Or what benefit, other than a CRYSTAL clear tank would it yield? ie (More Fish, etc)

The minium is 5 times a hour. What ever the Canister pumps out a hour, half that because they do not pump out what they rate. I run 2 XP3's and one AC 70 on my 100GAL. Plus I like having 2 just in case one fails :)

Interesting. I've always had enough filtration to cycle it about twice an hour, and never had any problems. But basically what you are saying is the more the better. I like the idea of a backup as well.

Depending on the fish you keep and stocking levels 5 times an hour may not be needed but I am a fan of never enough filtration. On my 90 gallon I run 2 Aqua Clear 500's (old 110's) and a marineland magnum 350. I house central american cichlids in the tank so they can be messy. Im thinking of getting another canister on the tank possibly a rena. Just so you know you can save a ton of money by buying it online. Check out www.bigals.com or www.petsmart.com . Just so you know if you have a petsmart near by print the order page for the filter you want and bring it to the store and they will match there online price for it. This way you save on shipping as well.

I like 3 times per hour minimum, tho 2 times will work. But when I say 3 times I mean actual turnover - I measure what the filter is actually pumping.

When people say 5 times per hour or 10 times per hour on the forum here I have a feeling they are often going on the advertised rate of the filter, which is an ideal flow rate of the pump only (tho some filters give both pump and filter rate) and not a real rate.

So while twice per hour might seem enough (tho 3 is more the minimum), it's not really. Once you get the real output, which is often half the rated turnover as said here, you are only getting a turnover of once per hour...

And in that case even two of the filters are only turning the tank over twice per hour... hmm...

So what REAL flow rate are people getting with an xp3???

I know my Chinese canisters are pumping 500-600l/hr actual, so I get a turnover of between 2 and 3 on the 220litre tanks. They have a very large biomedia capacity. This works very well, except on the goldfish which need 2 of the same filter...
