Replaced cartrige with a sponge...

I bought an aqua clear sponge and cut it to fit my filter on my 5 gallon. It's a regent filter. I don't know how to explain this well, but the sponge fills up the whole back of the filter. Is it okay if it does that? Or does there need to be a space between the very back of the filter and the sponge. Thanks.

Should be fine. I crammed the inside of my penguin filter with sponge meant for Rena filters. It catchs all the debris and is easier to maintain than the cartridges.

If you left a space much of the water would bypass the sponge making it less effective.

I put a fluval sponge into my eclipse (25 gal tall) and then cut a piece of bonded filter pad to fit... put that on top of the sponge. Now if I can just find a way to reduce the surface agitation....
