I'm a big animal lover too, but sub(OP) took these fish because they were in an unhealthy environment. Sending them into another miserable unhealthy situation is not really a kindness to them. A humane death may be preferable to a painful and drawn out one. culling deformed and undesirable fry works on the same principle.
Just my thoughts- I know it's a sensitive topic, we are all entitled our beliefs.
