Rescued Oscar from Petco, tank size question.

Thanks for the replies. Once I get the 2 big ones eating again and looking more healthy I will try adding the little oscar back into the tank. I put the little guy in a 40g since I am medicating the big tank trying to help the 2 big oscars. I saw some white growth on one of the oscars that looks like fungus so I bought fungus and parasite clear medications. I will get some pictures up friday or saturday morning when my girlfriend brings my digital camera back.

Oscars not only need elbow room, they will take it from their tank mates (by killing or eating them). This applies to other oscars in limited quarters. You can uncomfortably house a single in a 20-gallon tank. They really need 30+ gallons. Two adults will co-exist in a 55. They need a 70. Four can live in the 70, but expect lots of arguments.

i found that on a website. is that corrector is it bogun info?

aqaualandpetsplus. i love that site and visit at least once a week. however, just like the owner himself always says (if you read the Q&A's) - don't trust everything you read on the internet. the advice from there is overall very good, but for some things, like the oscar tank size you quoted, you have to use your own experiences and research, and keep that grain of salt handy. i would go with a minimum of 55g for one adult. . . you could certainly keep one in smaller quarters if it was a juvenile, or an emergency situation, or (like the aqualand pets store does) you are keeping them very short-term. they accept a lot of trade-ins on larger fish.

that info on the Oscars is pretty much nonsense galen...think of a regular size 30 gallon...now think of a 12 inch fish in there...not pretty

I agree with a lot of the people and say 100 gallons should be fine with all 3 of them for a while. Make sure not to add the small one though until you see the fungus or whatever it is clear up, and not until they show signs of healthy behavior or they may pass it onto the little one that has got you whipped with the dancing lol

Im going to pick up a 55g today to buy me some more time for the little one to grow and the big ones to get healthier. They still havent eaten, Im not sure how to use garlic to stimulate the appetite ,do I just soak some pellets with some boiled garlic for awhile? Ive tried almost every food petco/petsmart has to offer. They dont even bother looking up at it. I even added 4 zebra danios to their tank and still no reaction.

i'veh eard of people trying all sorts of things..

we have archers (insectivores) and we dipped live crickets in garlic oil and dropped them in the tank. the oil makes it kinda messy though.

i'v eheard of people mixing garlic powder in with the days food. and i've heard of people dropping a hole clove or slices of clove in the tank.

they also sell this stuff:

It used to be standard that people kept oscars in 55 gals.

Thanks for all the help guys, A guy with a 240 gallon contacted me through craigslist and he picked them both up. I told them they werent eating yet but he still wanted them. Also I sold my terrarium to the same guy so win - win for me. Now my baby oscar gets to go back to his big home and it will just be him and maybe 3 silver dollars in the 100g.
