Reseal or not? 9 years old glass 55G

Yesterday, I picked it up glass 55G through craigslist. The previous owner told me that he was the first owner and used it for 3-4 years.
Well, I just found out the manufactured date label and it obviously 9 years old one. I haven't setup this old tank before. Do I have to remove the seal completely and and reseal it? (It is not leaking through a day test though.)
 
I would continue with the leak test for another day or two.

Is the seal material (assuming it's silicone) still pliable/soft? If it is, I would say it's safe to use after the leak/shake-down test. I would only worry if the seals were hard.
 
i would say if the tank had not sat dry for too long and the silicone still feels soft and pliable, you're good to go.

i would check very very carefully for any places on the sealed edges where the silicone looks like it may have torn off or is not thick in places. that could cause a problem.

Yes, it is still soft.
We are going to continue with teh test till Friday and will set it up on Sat.

my last fishroom had tanks set up continuously since 1991 until this past september. some of the tanks were almost 20 years running, never resealed.

you have quite a few years left before you need to do anything especially if it is fine now.

Then, our other tanks are kids because they are under 5 years.. :)
 
My friend has a 100g tank in his basement that has been up and running since 1971... never completely emptied and its fine

as long as the tank looks good.. and has been taken care of-- and the seals arent hard and cracking.. it will be fine

I have a 29 and a 55 that I'm thinking I bought back in about 1972-73. I can't remember but I think one is Metaframe and the other an Odell. Anyways... I am still using these tanks today. They were actually stored in my basement for a few years while I took time off to raise a couple of kids. These have never been resealed and have been back in use for about 5 years now. I guess that's why I'm not afraid of buying a used tank.
