So I just acquired a 55 long from craigslist: tank, stand, hob filter (which I will only keep until I have enough saved for a canister) and 2 light strips for $150

The seals are a little worn, and there is some sort of algae or bacteria or fungus in between the silicone and the glass, so I decided to reseal it. I have resealed a 15 gallon for a friend before, but never something so big.

Does anyone know off the top of their head how many ounces of silicone I will approximately need to reseal a 55 long? I am buying tubes from Drsfosterandsmith.com, they come in 10 oz packages, so I am wondering how many I need.

Also any tips any of you have from personal resealing experience would be realllllllly appreciated!

And of course I will be photo-documenting this so I can share with you all my new tank from start to finish!!!

I would probably buy three tubes, which should be plenty, but far better to have more than enough than to run out when you're 90% done and have to do it all over again.

The process itself is pretty easy - just scrape out all the old stuff with a razorblade, i vacuum all the stuff out then wipe it down really well, then clean the glass with alcohol. Some people use masking tape to make nice clean caulk lines, I don't bother. Then just let it cure for at least 48 hours before you test fill it and you're good.

Hey thanks for the reply! (where is everyone else?! Did I miss a memo about some sort of vacation?! haha)

I figured I would need a few, but its nice to have a rough estimate on how much! I am planning some slate caves too, so I figured I could always use any extra for that...

Thanks for the response!
