I've resealed quite a few tanks but never taken the glass panels apart. You're right, that would be too much especially on a curved tank I bet. The only time it didn't work was when I got lazy with residue removal, lesson learned. Do it right & it may last 10-20+ years.
I should have said use a wet finger to smooth the silicone very soon after you apply it. Then remove the tape right away before it starts to skin over. Don't goof around or take a lunch break.
