Residue on Heater

Hi all, I am a newbie fish owner and have made just about every mistake in the book so far. I am rapidly trying to correct that situation as I love my fish and have been saddened by the several that have died recently. I can't do anything small, I have three tanks set up already and have lost one fish from each over the last month and a half. In my 1 gallon betta tank, the first betta had fungus (I think that came home from the petstore with him as the new betta is very happy and healthy).

I lost one pleco from my 10G due to shock the first 24 hours after having him and also possibly because the water was too cold. So got a heater and another pleco and that tank is ok. I did lose one of the orignal goldfish also, but once again I think he may have been sick fromt he petstore as none of the other fish are sick and that tank has been healthy over a month now.

I just got a 35 gallon used from a friend and still being new I didn't cycle the water properly and added my fish way too fast (I guess we all have to learnt he hard way) also just found out that tank is probably over stocked (current sizes are probably ok, but some of the fish will get bigger and can't stay, which is fine I am getting a 55 G in a couple of weeks to move soem fish into.) I did clean the tank thoroughly before using at least.

I just lost one of my tiger barbs yesterday from my 35 G, I suspect it might have had velvet (It was very opalescent/gold looking and it was swimming with its tail curved way down) My other fish are currently ok, but am continuing the treatment for velvet as some of them also have a slight golden sheen. My current question is, I have a white fuzz on the heater and am not sure what it is. I don't have the fuzz in my 10G goldfish tank which has the same heater, same type of water, etc. Any ideas?

Like I said, I know I screwed up adding fish too fast and not cycling my tank correctly (now I know). I do have a PH problem in both tanks that I am treating currently with a PH regulator (PH is around 8.4 current - yikes!) and 25% water changes every other day or so. So I just want to know if the fuzz on my heater is anything to be alarmed about.

Oh yeah, I probably should include what I have in my tanks:

1G - 1 male betta

10 G - 3 feeder goldfish (little $0.26 guys for my daughter to watch), 1 pictus catfish, 1 pleco ( I know, plecos and goldfish may not mix I have heard both opinions on that one)

35 G - 9 Tiger Barbs, 3 Opaline Gouramis (these will be moved to the new tank), 2 pictus catfish, 1 pleco, 1 albino rainbow shark, 1 peacock eel, 3 live plants (not sure exactly what kind)

Unplug the heater, let it cool and remove it from the tank. Most heaters have fuzzy white insulation inside them. Carefully check the outside of the heater for cracks and stuff. The white stuff could be from inside the heater. If you find anything, throw the heater away and get a new one.

Heater fuzz

No cracks int he heater. Looks like crystalline precipitation from the water actually, so I am probably ok. I do have very hard water in my area.
