OK. I know i will get this answer if i dont state this up front:

I know i can look online to get my answer. I want *your* personal experiance or knowledge. Not the world wide web's thoughts.

Anyway, I was thinking of selling all my fish in my 18g and turning it into a cichlid tank of some sort. Obviously, I would need some small species. But, that is OK.

Thank you in advance. :D

I was curious about this as well- don't the majority of cichlids require a larger tank than an 18 gallon?

Yeah, but they are fascinating little buggers, and pound for pound are some mean fish. With just 18g theres not gonna be too much you can do :(

If you still have those texas fry you might be able to have them in there for a little bit, but they'll need a much bigger tank.

Rams and especially bolivian rams use more of the tank than your standard dwarfs...my bolivian rams are all over the place. A pair in there would be great.

As for shellies, if you go with Neolamprologus multifasciatus or similis, both colony dwellers, you could go with 6 and watch the fun begin. These guys need sand (argonite sand, play sand, etc.) and high pH. They dig like mad, and also need shells - 2 or three each - about the size of escargot shells or mid sized apple snail shells. Yes, these fish stay near the bottom, except when eating and they all swim up in a wave, but they do dig all the time and are very, very active. Believe me, they're fun all by themselves.

Also, a semi shellie - neolamprologus caudopunctatus would do well as a pair in there, and they hang out all over the tank - it's like they're on patrol.

You could try Kribensis, although if you have a mating pair they may turn aggressive. Very attractive fish though!
