Restarting a Fluval 404

Any tips on restarting my Fluval 404. I just bought it a few weeks ago ant took it apart for the first time to clean it. I can't seem to get it to primed, and when i fill up the unit trying to shortcut it, it leaks around the seal. I just read that leaking is a common problem with fluvals

Pump the primer until you see water squirting out of the outlet. Then turn it on

At least that is all that I had to do, no leaks though for me.

Never would take all the air out of the intake. I juste ended up filling the bottom up, then pouring water down the intake and starting it up. Sure gave me a headache, though. c:

With my fluval I just siphon some tank water into the unit before I seal it (I know this is not what the directions say). I then plug it in and it instantly starts up.
