Restocking my 55 gallon...

I would go with a nice size school of either Glow lights, neons or Cardnials. Probably about 20-30 fish. I know this is a lot of fish but I think this tank can handle it and it would be nice to see these guys be the main display fish.
 
I may be way off here, but is there any chance I could get a pair of discus for my show fish along with a school of neons, cardinals or rasboras? Just a thought I had... I've always wanted discus... I wouldn't know where to get them around here though.
 
Yeah I suppose you could do that, but I'm not really sure if 55 is large enough (maybe it is, I don't really know about discus). A lot of people with large tanks have a few discus with a large school of neons or cardinals. It's like a South American themed aquarium. Very nice effect.

Discus person to hunt down is 125gal joe.. nice guy and has a gorgous tank. I personally feel that a 55 is to small for adult discus. I think joe started out with a 90 for his.
 
I think the discus idea was more of a whim than anything... I've read that you can keep them in a 55, but it's better to keep them in groups of six or more, so obviously more water is required...

I think I've narrowed it down to a school of rasboras, cardinals or neons... Still trying to decide on a bigger pair as my show fish... I've never had any of the dwarf african cichlids... Would they be too agressive for this type of community tank?
 
Cardinals and harlequin rasboras are great because they tend to cruise along pretty slowly. Never seem to be in much of a rush. I like rams also but they tend to stay more around the bottom with the cories.

my rams spawn quite often and the cories soon learn that going near the eggs=abuse from rams. usually after the first or second day there are no problems because the cories stay away from that area of the tank.
 
So...

So would a pair of African Dwarf Cichlids mix well in a tank with a betta, 15-20 cardinals/neons/rasboras, and 6 spotted corys? My guess would be this wouldn't work, but I've never kept them before so I'm not really sure if they are as agressive as oscars/jack demseys, etc.

I have to second the Rasboras. They were the 2nd fish I put in my 55 gallon(right after my danios cycled it) and they are quite pleasant to watch. They school around and there is just something about their characteristic black mark that draws the eye. I've got 5 and plan on adding at least 2-3 more to the school.
