More light is almost always better plus the higher wattage will have a greater depth penetration allowing you to place your inverts as you like in the tank.
But at the same time other corals prefer lower light situations, correct. I guess I just need a little more convincing on why the 175w PC is better for my situation. Keep in mind this will be my first SW tank... if that makes any difference.
It would really help if you knew what you were going to try and keep. as for lower light situations you can create shade areas with the live rock. The 175 will jsut have more penetration and allow for a variety of things to be kept. Im can't think of anything this would really be overkill on light for. Heck I had a 250MH and two 64 watt PC over my 45 gallon tank.
Would using a 175w dual strip PC used with a 40g tank help other types of algi to grown on the tank itself as opposed to a lower powered light?
I'd like the light to actually somewhat promote coraline algi as I think this type of algi adds a lot of character to a tank. If a 175w PC is going to kill off existing coraline algi from live rock I buy or severely limit growth of it, I'm not sure if I want to go up to 175w.
*EDIT* I just realized I meant to call it a 192w dual strip PC! My mistake.
As I noted above I have almost 1000 watts of light over my tank and have great coraline growth from deep reds to the pinks, purples, and even a neon green growing.
Polyp Corals
Button Polyps (Protopalythoa)
Star Polyps (Pachyclavularia)
Mushroom Corals
Mixed variety of Mushroom Corals (Actinodiscus)
This is not to say that I'd be getting all of these, but I'd definitely want to get some of these. I'm assuming the 175w PC would probably do me some good with these, right?
