Rinsing sand with tap water

Is rinsing sand really necessary? I remember that it was necessary to rinse crushed coral before use, but I really don't know about sand as this will be the first time that I will be using it.

It is necessary unless it is live sand... anyways, back to my question. Will dechlorinated water work to replce RO water when rinsing sand? I was thiking just rinsing with tap water then pouring a bucket of dechlorinated water on it as the final rinse.

i wonder if that would work to, it may help me save some cash when i put the sand in my tank....

Well if i was to do that i would put the sand in the tank (with RO water) and stir it a lot to mix the RO water and the sand nice and well, that way you only introduced a few gallons of tap water which is diluted by whatsoever amount of RO water. Dunno if that would work though...
