Ok, I keep hearing and reading bad things about Rio pumps spewing oil. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of this, or did it happen once to someone and get blown out of proportion? I have a Rio 1700 on my skimmer and will quickly remove it if this is in fact the case.

Thanks in advance,

I had one that was free in a bucket of salt. Figured what the heck, might as well throw it in for water movement in my filtered water tub. It never leaked a drop of oil, but it died within 6 months--just quit working. For my money, I'd rather have something that will last longer than that--of course, this was a small model, and a freebie at that, so who knows.

I had one break in my hospital tank . It spewed oil all over the place . I only losta fish . That was a while back though so their quality may have improved or, I may have had a dud.

Never had a problem with oil and I have had a least 30 or more of these pumps. The only problem I have encountered is them stoping, never to pump water again. The longest I had one working for for was 7 years, the shortest was about year but I droped that one when I first got it. I have also been shocked by one after a few years of pulling it out by the cord to clean it, not a good idea. ;)
