Don't get me wrong — I love big fish. I've always wanted to keep peacock bass. Of course, I don't have the tank space for something of that size (yet). What gets me going is that the huge majority of people who buy a (redtail, arowana, pacu, channel cat, etc.) have no plan for housing the adult that will grow from the 3" baby they bought. In fact, I'd say most have no idea how large their fish will grow. I know there are big-fish keepers out there who are responsible owners and plan ahead for the potential size of their charges. I wholeheartedly support those individuals and hope one day to be among them. It's just too bad there's no way to weed out the idjits that are not going to provide for big fishes' special needs.

WARNING: :OT: Government, shmovernment. But that's what will happen eventually, because no one seems to be capable of taking on the responsibility of their own choices anymore. If people could just think for 10 seconds about the consequences of their actions, maybe we wouldn't need the government to protect us from ourselves. Of course, that's never going to happen, so what we should do is let people who do things thoughtlessly live with the repercussions of their unfortunate decisions. :rant2:

Amen to that. I am big boy and can make my own decisions I don't need the government playing big brother to me because no one seems capable of making a rational decision themselves.

Problem is, at least on this board, the second you question someone's plans for their fish a year or two down the road, be it an honest curiosity or not, the next poster takes it as the spark to ignite their flame posting. I've had my share of flames, most frustratingly when I have a panic situation in one of my tanks and the only advice that I get is that my grow out tank with 3-3" IDs and a 2.5" channel cat is grossly overstocked.
