Well, I am trying not to make any.. more, costly mistakes, I was/have been searching around for a cheap system for my tank and I just happened across this tonight on ebay.. it has 6 stages? I have no idea what that means.. but is it a good deal? cuz the price tag fits my budget.. so I'd like to know if I should order it up =)

RO/DI System

Unfortunately, that unit is sub-par in terms of quality and filtration efficiency. Take a look here, instead. You'll find that this unit is affordable and of excellent quality (as is the product water that comes out of it). They also have four stage units that are about 20-30 USD cheaper.

I guess if I'm gonna do it I should do it right.. Thanks for that, I have already looked at that post from bulkreef and that is probably what I will get then.. was just looking for a better deal

Check the other units on BRS. Their 4 stage unit (better than the Ebay one) is even cheaper than the one you linked to @ $129.

I know I'm a newbie to all this and by all means, don't waste your breath trying to explain it if it's just too much, but I can't figure out what makes this 4 stage one better than the 6 stage one.. is it the filter media? I mean.. they say the same thing in my mind.. what am I missing? is it just the people who make it?

Good question, actually. It has to do with the orientation of the DI stages. Note the horizontal position on the Ebay one. This results in inefficient contact, wasted resin, and poor quality product water. The vertical DI is much more efficient and will last longer while doing a better job. Hope that clears it up a bit.

Ah that does clear it up.. and actually makes sense to me! I think I will just be using the culligan water for a couple more weeks and save up for the 5 stage one.. I do want it to be a good system.. I assume that one day I will convert the empty 55g in the garage or the 75g that I just bought for FW into a SW tank or 2 hehe .. I am learning so much about this SW stuff and it's just blowing me away all the different stuff.. very exciting =) Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

WELL let me just say DOH!:wall: Yep I got one off ebay.

I did notice that the Di stages seemed to be a poor set up. I can easily fix that on my unit by changing the orientation of thoes stages. I got lotsa xtra tubbing. After watching that little Video I am kinda depressed. I havent seen there filters before now and I guess I just pulled the trigger too fast on the system I got. I can also buy better cartrages when its time to swap them out in 3 or so months so Not a big deal there I guess. Live and learn. I will say the quality of watter seems great out of my unit. I dont have any fance tests but it seemes good. I test for normal stuff and its all good. WOULD longer contact with the DI resins cause the PH to drop more? I tell ya what - the water going in looks tan - nasty county water. But when it comes out the filter in my bucket it looks blue! Thats gota be doing something!!!!!!!

PS - I just watched the videos and he said its improtant to have the resins packed in tight. The resins in the Ebay system are just loos and sloshing around? Maybe I should just replace the entire DI part of the filter? What do ya think?

What do you guys think?

WELL I got motivated when I got home so I moved them to a different orientation. What do ya think? Both of the DI chambers flow from top to bottom now.

I guess I would be really interested to know what the "fancy" tests show as the end result.. ever consider buying some? =) If you could post results and we could compare it to the more "expensive" systems out there we'd know what's up.. but I do have to admit, so far.. it sounds like you've certainly improved your system by doing something that small gj! :thm:
