roaches and fish....

what's so special about oakin? cant you just buy some spray and do it yourself. Why would oakin want to kill off the roachs, isnt that their business?

As to the OP, if your tank meets the requirement, get a big fish that eats them. 2 birds, 1 stone.

Yes, it is Orkin's business, but I'll use my house as an example. The poison or whatever is sprayed for our ant problem is only said to last 4 months. For the people who have an infestation because they are filthy people. The ants and roaches will be back in time. It's nature. Those people will keep Orkin and other pest controllers fat and happy.
For the people who keep a clean and sanitary living environment and have an infestation like myself and the other people that have posted in this thread, they move in on something that was bought or given to us. A good exterminator will eliminate them for awhile per visit. It's up to us to make sure they don't come back.
As far as getting a fish that eats them, that's a bad idea. IMO for 2 reasons. 1. I don't think it's good to add more fish to a tank to try and combat a problem. 2. The roaches that eat the baits that everyone suggested will be the same roach that the fish eats. Baits are meant for the roaches to take back to their colony. in this case they will take it to your tank and kill your fish instead of other roaches.

:iagree: The only thing here in Florida that I need the exterminator to keep coming back for are those irritating sugar ants. They are so tiny and can get in everywhere. I haven't had to deal with them in my new house yet, but I'm sure its only a matter of time.

Course roaches fly into the house all the time here, but have cats :grinyes: a bug flies in my house doesn't stand much of a chance.

Lets not forget that having a "nasty filthy" house isnt the only reason that people have an infestation of roaches. If you live in an apartment complex, or where you have neighbors that are really close that have roaches, chances are you will have them as well no matter how clean you are.

As far as removing them from behind your filter, clean the area and keep it clean weekly. Use vinegar and water or plain lemon juice and water. This should prevent the roaches from being attracted to the area, and keeping it wiped down should prevent any nesting there.

As far as I see it - lots of roaches means lots of free fish food. If you want to catch them, put out a small saucer of sugar water and they'll flock to it.

I wouldn't recommend doing that. Roaches are filthy creatures that can harbor parasites. I wouldn't risk feeding them to your fish because there's no telling what kind of contaminates you would be introducing to your aquarium.

As another Floridian, I agree that roaches are just a part of life. Just be diligent about keeping your house clean, sprinkle Borax laundry detergent all of your floors and vacuum it up, and give your local pest control guy a call.

Good luck!

Sometimes I when I get home from a long day at work I have myself a smoke in from of the reef tank to relax. I keep roaches from accumulating by keeping them in an ashtray instead of behind my tank.

Sorry, there's no way I was the only one who wasn't thinking of the creepy-crawly kind of roach...

I think some people are forgetting that roaches are attracted to dripping water more then a food source. MAKE sure you don't have a drippy faucet because "your" roaches will love it!.
