So is it a good idea to lean some of the rocks in the tank up against the walls? It seems like it would be too much weight for the glass but i have seen pictures of ppl doing it. If i cant then how would i get the round rocks to stack good without having the chance of them falling?

Correct me if I am wrong, but won't the rocks create scratches in the glass and thuss weaking it in the long run? Try going to a landscape place and getting some flat ones. Or Home Depot carries a rock chisel for cement blocks. Get that and a hammer and make one flat surface on the rocks. Little work, but might work.

Clear silicone !!!
Anything hard that I intend to put near the glass gets held in place one way or another with clear silicone. It can be cut off the glass later with a razor blade, and prevents movement of the rocks against the glass. If I am stacking rocks I also glue them together with silicone.

what i did for my 55g was got some slate from lows and got some rocks and i broke the slate into nice sized peices and built big structurse for my fish and i used aquarium sealent and it works great

Well thanxs guys/girls. I ordered some aquarium safe silicon from a website to hold my rocks together. I am also maybe gonna get some flat rocks from a landscape place for the main rock structure. That will save on silicon. :)

I have quite a few mbuna tanks with extensive rockwork and I don't like to lean rocks against the side glass. I want my rockpiles to be stable and resting just one another. I don't silicone them (never had great luck with silicone sticking rocks together) and I don't expoxy them, mainly because it makes it difficult to break down the tank for cleaning or fry-catching.

In any case, if you have digging fish, make sure you place rocks directly on the tank bottom (or on some cushion that rests on the tank bottom), and then add substrated. The last thing you want is for digging fish (or an overactive gravel vacuum) to undermine your rock structure and cause a landslide.

Good luck,
Jim

I do the same thing as you Jschmidt. I dont use anything to hold them together BUT I do lean mine against the side panels of glass. Never had a problem.
