rocks for an aquarium and other questions

ok so i ran into a snag after doin a vineger test i boiled the slate and it devaloped a white resadue over the rock. it looks like some form of sealant/glue id post a pic but i cant figure out how too.


so im not gonna use the rocks but was just curious if anyone knows what this is or ran into similar problem

Is it just a hard water stain? Does it go away when the rock is wet? Will vinegar clean it up?

How long did you boil them for, if you boiled most of the water out of the pot, I would guess it is hard water stains, otherwise, you are making the right decision to err on the side of caution.
 
no its kinda oposite the majority goes away when dry but when you boil it again it becomes white. i boiled it for just 5 min didnt want it blowing up on me or anything
 
rock-safety...

The rocks came from a combination of garden shops and a friends place up in the bush. Would these be useable in the tank, if so is there anythingi should do b4 adding them ?

Just a suggestion...but you may want to know exactly where the rocks came from.

I've read somewhere that one should be careful about rocks from gardens, and shops where they store chemicals and rocks close to each other. I believe they could have absorbed some of the fertilizers and pesticides, which will be toxic to your fish...

that would be my worry about rocks from a garden. fert and pesticides. as for the poster that mentioned amythyst. i have 2 one huge crystal and a piece of a geode covered in amythyst in my tanks have been there for years and have never messed with my ph
