I want to redecorate my 29 gal. tank to better accomodate my solo malawi cichlid. I was thinking of buying some sort of decor (which is of course going to be expensive) but then i realized... couldnt i just use the smooth rocks from the beach to build up a sort of rock sculpture on the back wall or corner?

So i ask you... is that ok? what should i do to prepare the rocks and make sure they're clean ect. thanx.

You could do that. One bit of warning though. I too thought that it would be okay to grab a few rocks from a public place until the DNR (Department of Natural Resorses) checked my bag for fish and saw rocks. I got a ticket for taking rocks from a public area. Never knew that was illigeal, but it was. Who knew?

Wow. Thats weird. Ill have to be sbeaky about it i guess.

How much'd knock you up for?

Hello :D

I dont know what it is like where your from but here in Oz the local landscapers are a great place to source rocks. I bought about 15 great rocks for 6 bucks (au dollars). I have slowly been removing them as i can afford lighter stuff because of the weight issue though.

A great idea. Not sure why no one thought to post it.

Anyway, just goto your local landscape supply. You should get nice rocks pretty cheap if your local places are like the one I use. $30 for a ton of granite. I paid $3 for 30 pounds to put in my 20 and I had a few rocks left over.

Soaking the rocks in a bleach solution, rinsing them, and then soaking them in fresh water with a massive overdose of dechlor will be more effective then boiling them. You could also bake them in the oven at the highest setting (dry heat). Boiling will kill invertabrates, but will not effect many species of bacteria and fungal spores (boiling water can only get so hot).

P.S. I'm not sure that any of these techniques are even needed as a fish with a healthy immune system should not be affected by things like bacteria or fugus but why risk it.
