can I just go out and find some nice rock and add it to the tank, or is there specific rock I must use? I love some of the rock people use, orange etc. but have not idea what kinds of rock it is. I live in Montana, any idea's? I hate to add rock and it harm my fish or tank.
thanks

River rock is the cheapest way to go.

Depending on your bio-type it might even look better.

I opted for the expensive route when I got my latest African cichlid tank and got $260 in lace rock. I like how light-weight and versatile it is.

heh i was thinking about pickin rocks off the river and put it in my tank. but i live in nyc and there are hardly any rocks here..is it legal to go to parks such as central park to get them?
I wouldn't go to Central Park for rocks and I'm sure the practice is at the least discouraged, if not illegal. Parks in heavily-populated areas tend to not only be stripped of nice rocks, but also polluted to some extent.

I recommend saving the rock-hunting for a time when you're on vacation or out in the wild or countryside. I collected rocks one time when I was off-roading with my brother in the mountains.

I use some rocks I found on the Lake Michigan beach along with some petrified wood. In my travels i've noticed that the bigger and older the body of water is, the cooler the rocks look. If your gonna get something from a river find a big one with lots of curves (the more curves the older the river). And I would only get rocks that are already in water or along side of it.

drift wood, just the kind I find in lakes and streams? boil this to and it will work fine? that pet store wanted so much i amost threw up!
