i looked on the boards and found many answers. i have these rocks i was thinking about putting in my tank. they were given to me from someone who had them in their house for many years. they been sitting in a bucket for a year or so. should i still boil them? i was thinking of testing if the ph lvl changes in the water. how long should i leave them in water? some have crystals on them. will they effect the water? anything i should know before putting them in?

test them to make sure theres no lime in it, a little squirt of vineger and wait and see if theres a reaction (should start to fizz). if there is a reaction, it's a no go, if not, go ahead and put it in your tank! however, boiling would still be a good idea to make sure thres no toxins in iy that would be introduced to your tank.

ok so i put vineger on the rocks. there was one i am not to sure of. it did bubble but only on the cracks. when i put it under water and took it out it did the same thing. there are many cracks and holes on the rock. i think it was just air bubbles. ill take a pic of it and post to see what you guys think. its such a cool rock.

this is the rock i want to put in my tank. i am a little worried since it did bubble a little. i am not sure if this is a reaction or just air bubbles. when i put vineger would it bubble a lot all over the rock?

Vinegar is not a very accurate test. Best to use hydrochloric acid. If you have an Aquarium Pharmaceutical nitrate test kit, then you already have some in bottle #2. Scratch an area with a knife and put a drop of #2 on the scratch. If it bubbles, it's not safe.
