my 10g currently has 1male betta, 3 cories, and an oto. my g/f really wants me to get some ghost shrimp, about 5, for my tank. i think it might be a bit too much for the little tank. what do you guys think??

it might work, but many bettas love to kill and eat shrimp. you'd be taking a risk if you got some.

i think the MOST you should have is 2-3, really...

if i ever gave my amanos to my male betta (brown with pink/brown tail with dark brown spots on it) he would obliterate them (tried to eat my finger when i got him)... hes huge, like 4"

Why on earth is that? I have around 15 in mine right now. Everyone gets along fine. The only thing I would worry about is the betta, since when I tried to put a few in his tank to see how he would react he freaked and tried to eat 'em. Darn betta. I had to take them out and put them in the 10. Some people with shrimp only tanks keep 50-100 shrimp in a 10 gallon. Some are smaller than others, though.

These shrimp don't add much at all to the bioload and with what he already has in there he could definately add more than 3 of these shrimp. I'd say around 10 is a good number.

If you have predatory fish the amount of ghost shrimp you can get away with depends on the number of hiding spaces you have for them. I have plants and caves in my tank and a very inquisitive angel who has eaten shrimp in the past. Yet, in spite of this, I still have about 7 or 8 shrimp left in the tank......and I haven't added any more for about a year now. They mostly hide during the day or come out when I put food in the tank. They're pretty safe at that time since the angel is focused entirely on the quick meal rather than the critters it might have to hunt.

Just give your shrimp some plants and caves to hide in and you'll be fine. You can start out with something like 10 if you want. Don't be surprised if you see that number dwindle over time. There are only so many hiding spaces in a 10 gallon and the shrimp will take a little while to figure out the best way to hide from the betta. Eventually, though, you'll get to some kind of equillibrium and you'll have a few "permanent" ghosties. Again, that final number will depend on how many hiding spaces you have and how aggressive/hungry your betta is.

I have ghost shrimp in with my betta, he's never bothered them. They're pretty much free on the bioload.

i have 6 ghost shrimp in a 10g with my male betta. i bought one just to make sure he wouldn't eat it..i couldn't find him after a couple hours so i figured he was eaten. then i did a water change and a gravel vac and found he had molted and was hidden(very well) in a hollow plastic decoration. i'm up to 6 shrimp for now and have yet to see any trouble with the betta and them.

my tank does have a nice amount of plants and i just added a piece of driftwood that is kind of like a cave that they could hide in. i think i'll pick some up tonight, thanks guys

buy one of two and see how long you can keep them alive/it takes him to eat them. if they live for a pretty long time with him, you should be able to get some more.

you will be able to fit plenty of ghost shrimp into a ten gallon. 2-3 goes well for a 1 gallon tank.
