Hello, all

All my plants grow very well, but the roots run all the way up the stem causing it to look like a bush. :thud: Does anyone have any ideas?

My setup :
1)I have about 3" of Flourite
2)EHEIM pro II 2026 model filter
3)CO2 ejection
4)2-65 watt lamps (10.000K) "Power Compact", first lamp runs from 10am to 8pm, and second turns on at 2pm and runs until 4-5pm.
5)I add all the different Flourish Additives

My plants are:
1) Rotala Indica (the leaves that grew in my tank became wider than the
original (became about 5/16")
2)Rotala Magenta (same as above)
3)Bacopa Carolniana
4)Bacopa Monnieri
5)Ludwigia Repens

If anyone has any ideas please help me. :bowing:

Unfortunately that does happen. You can clip the roots off, but that seems tedious. I don't like the look of it either...

Thanks for replying

All my plants have the roots going up the stem, not just 1 or 2 of them. Does anyone have any idea, how to get rid of it, or why its happening?

It's natural, they're stem plants. You can clip or pinch them off or get different plants that won't grow roots up the stems (i.e. crypt, swords...).

The Rotala Indica I have in my 75 planted discus tank is doing this and I'm laying the stems down and burying the roots. I'm hoping new shoots will grow and it'll help the plants spread faster than they already are spreading.

i've accepted the fact that it's a natural behavior and that's what stem plants do to strive for more nutrients in the water. my red ludwigias went crazy doing this, and i kinda liked the effect,

i guess just work with what you got!

I wonder if there were enough nutrients provided through the substrate, would the plant produce fewer aerial roots? Could a more nutrient rich soil result in a lower number of "aerial roots"? This is just a blind thought and I don't think it would matter.
But could there be a correlation between a poor soil/nutrient rich water column and a greater number of aerial roots? Maybe it does matter?
