Roots growing out the tops of my plants

I pulled these roots off a few days ago and now look how many there is..

What's the problem here?
I dose on a daily schedule, I should not be lacking this much nutrients for this to be happening..
There's many people out there that dose much less then me without this problem..

Can I get a ID on this plant. I found it in my tank when I got a bunch of plants, it was only 1/2" tall with 2 leaves when I got it.

Plants are sleeping is why they are folding up.

lots of plants fold up when at rest, but they look like they need the nutrients, i belive u can just pinch them off if u dont like the look of them. perhaps its competing for nutrients with other plants?

Some plants when allowed to reach the surface and float start to put out roots along the entire length of the plant. Its can be irritating and still happen despite fertilization efforts.

But in my experiences it is always the ludwigia species that really put out alot of roots along their shaft if I allow them to become floaters.

My Ludwigia does it all the time. I'm guessing here, but that looks to be a Ludwigia 'X' variety of some sort.

Cut it off if you don't like it., although those are usually the best places to take cuttings for a new plant.

Those look like aerial roots, which I've found happen when my stem plants have not fully developed their in-ground root system. What are you using for a substrate? How long have the plants been planted?

Edit:
I see you're using sand as your substrate. Is it flourite? Or regular sand? If it's regular sand, did you use fert tabs in the substrate?

Most of the discussions I've seen about this have pretty much indicated it's just the burden we live with, having to pull them off. I only have problems with it on ludwigia sp. and rotala rotundfolia.

I've learned to ignore it.

I only have it on my Rotala and Ludwigia, like jmhart. I also have learned to live with it, but I only pinch off the roots that are large and noticable.

wow i got the same stuff! i thought it was normal so i never bothered. i have hellllla roots everywhere, some actually hit and dig into the substrate (half flourite half eco complete) to describe them, they're thicker then the regular roots found under the substrate and they do not branch at all, its like a white mini leafless stem.
