i bought a ropefish awhile back, and he is the most worthless fish of all time. i never see him do anything!! i went to different lfs and saw these and they were always active. the looked so cool i finally bought one, put him in my 30, and now he never does anything. he wont chase feeders, he just sits there. i have never seen him eat, but hes been alive for 3 weeks so he must eat somethin. ive fed them flakes, blood worms, brine shrimp, feeder guppies, and ive never seen him touch anything. i have a pleco, blood parrot, and african knifefish in there with him. does the active parrot fish scare him or what. ??

Rope fish are nocturnal--try observing him after lights out, with low ambient light. They tend to be active in the LFS because they are not given anything to hide in, so are stressed and trying to find someplace to stash themselves. You should try feeding after lights out as well, to insure that it can get to the food before everyone else. Fish have very, very slow metabolisms, and a healthy adult can go much longer than 3 weeks without feeding. Not that it's good for them, but they can do it.

My ropefish is actually my fave fish I have ever owned. He is WAY more active at night... he wont be very good at catching fish... they are mostly blind. Feeder guppies as they rest near the bottom at night will be caught since they are slow fish... but mine has never caught one of my neon's even. I have seen him try. I feed mine exclusivley on ghost srimp and earth worms.

Hope this helps.

Since they are mostly blind, and hunt by smell, i cut off a small piece of block tubifex worms and squish it in the tank, then hold onto it, my ropefish comes immediately out and over to my hand, he will come up on it and snatch it out of my hand, neat to watch actually.
I also put in shrimp pellets at night for him.

Another thing, are you sure it is a rope fish?
the local fish store i go to is selling cesealean worms and calling them black rope fish....these hide all the time and never come out...lol...i have one and hardly ever see him.
