I have a 46 bowfront tank with 6 neons, 4 peppered cories, 5 mollies, 3 otos, and I just purchased last week 2 roseline sharks. The tank is also planted.

My problem since i have had them they both were very active but now one of the roselines today just started swimming vertically head down generally staying in one location of the tank. My other roseline swims very actively.

There is now sign of outside sickness and still has great color. I just tested the water with near perfect conditions. 0 nitrates, 0 nitrites, and 0 ammonia. I also weekly do a 20% water change.

What should i do? Anyone have any suggestions???

I would like to add a few more but they do get kinda large so i dont know if i can fit a few more in?? How big have yours gotten??

I know they also prefer the water temperature to be on the cooler side. How warm is your tank? I have a group of four that's doing great in an unheated aquarium.

I've had mine for a couple of months and they don't seem to be the fastest growers. My LFS also has a bunch in a planted display tank and they're not getting too big too fast either. However, I've read in a bunch of places that they can get up to 6", and that a good minimum tank size for a full grown school is at least a 55g.

Hi There,

We've got exactly the same problem - bought 2 Roseline's the other day and now one is largely swimming vertically. I'm not sure that it's a harassment thing though - on one hand, the other one was chasing her around a bit - but it was hard to tell if it was a pushy, harassment kind of thing or if it was more like "Hey, you're swimming vertically - you need to move around!" It did seem to start after the vertical swimming did.

On the other hand, it looks like she just tends to float that way once she stops swimming - like her boyancy's all out of whack.

I've read a bit about swim bladder - sounds like it might be a possibility.

I did also read a comment somewhere about transition issues for fish coming into a new tank causing this type of thing - although it specifically mentioned letting them out of the bag too quickly, which I'm fairly certain wasn't the case here (...and I don't know where I read that either... so maybe that's totally off track?)

We did do a water change yesterday though and it was last night that we noticed the vertical swimming - Ph is fine, around 6.8. Haven't done Nitrites. But then, no other fishies are having problems.

I'm getting the impression that the best way to handle it is probably to skip the feeding today and maybe leave the lights off and just let the fish be for a bit. Does that sound like a reasonable approach?

As an add on problem - it looks like my tanks not really big enough for these guys (186 Litre / 37 Gallon). I broke one of the cardinal rules and bought without fully researching. Normally this fish shop is really good on that front though - they tell you everything and more and they ask you about your setup so you don't go wrong.... sadly I don't think they knew so much about the Roselines though. So I'm thinking we may have to return them - but, of course the fish shop isn't open so they'll have to stay put another 2 days...... so main thing is to make sure they're OK for now (oh, the other one seems quite content really, which is nice.) which brings me back to the beginning.

So basically, any feedback at this point would be very very much appreciated.

Thanks!
Cam
