would a rosy barb work well as a dither fish for a firemouth?

other suggestions appreciated

They'd be fine, eat hair algae too. I've got 12 Columbian tetra's, but Buenos Aires tetras work just as well.

if I put 2 firemouths and 2 rosy barbs in a 38, will they be ok in a 55 gallon later 6 months to a year?

Barbs are shoaling fish; you should have 5-6 of them. They will be fine with firemouth (or most other mild cichlids).

Rosy barbs are always active, hardy, and have a presence in the aquarium that does seem to get other fish to come out. I had five gold barbs that hid a lot, then added three rosy's, and now they all school together and swim the whole tank.

And rosy's can handle their own with most cichlids, they can reach up to 6 inches. They can out maneuver most large cichlids if they need to.
