So Petsmart marks them as 6in fish, I've read they only grow 4in max. That store seems to always mark the size of the fish way too big for most of them.

Anyway, I got 6 for my 35gal summer deck bin pond. They are doing well, at least from what I can see. It's been cold and raining, it's unheated and not filtered.

I have the whole surface covered in all sorts of floating plants. I tested the water before I released them, 0 ammonia. There was a ton of gunk at the bottom, so today I sucked up a bunch and added clean warm water. There are snails in there too, breeding. I have seen tiny water bugs and other 'pond' critters in there. Butterflies and dragonflies have been seen around it. There's a 4ft bit of wood too.

I wanted to know, will these tiny fish be ok in there?
Should I worry that most of the surface is covered up and nearly no sunlight gets to the bottom?
Do you think I should buy more friends for them?
Anything else I should know?
What about when fall comes and winter?
Should I bring them indoors, since it's not insulated in any way?

I have a 10 gallon in a guest bedroom, similar to the 'deck pond', but just indoors. No heater/filter with floating plants. I also change out water in this tank too.
How many could I keep in a 10g?

one of my friends breeds rosy minnows. I buy some to feed to my CKF, she started breeding them about 2 years ago and shes got the first 2 males she bought to breed in a seperate 20 gallon as her pets and neither of those are over 4 inches long, and i know they are at least a year and a half....hope this offers some perspective.

Are these the same as Rosy Red Minnows? I see this so-called care sheet on PetsMart's site... http://www.petsmart.com/uc/petartic.../content/fish/care/minnow/RosyRedMinnows.html

Unfortunately, they don't list the scientific name which is what you really need to know what you really have.

This is probably their scientific name, Pimephales promelas, so check out profiles on that name. The rosy-red is apparently a color variant of the fathead minnow. Here is the FishBase.org profile on them. http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=4785 FishBase has them growing to up to 10.1cm (apx. 4") and I would trust them over most other sites.
