just an update:

got to the pet store yesterday and the bugs had disappeared. from what i read about them they can swim off of their host, and apparently that's what they did.. I went ahead and brought him home, but i'm still keeping an eye out for new ones, because i know that it may take some time before eggs will hatch. but so far so good!

The eggs are attached only to decorations.
