The nitrification bacteria are not the digesters of fish poop, the heterotrophic bacteria do that, and the fish generally carry a good inoculation of those in their guts. Not directly related to cycling, except that the heterotrophs do contribute to the nitrogenous waste load. So by removing poop and uneaten food, you are reducing the nitrogen bioload.
