Rubbermaid instead of tank?

I use larger totes all the time,again use some 2x4s to brace the sides..I had one collapse..

Will the plants roots attatch to the container?
(java ferns, moss) Only a thin layer of gravel..

They are also good later on for a quick QT tank or for transporting fish on a move.
