Hi guys, long time no post.

I picked up this pleco from an lfs for a non-heated tank in my living room. Now that he has the tank walls pretty clean, Ive been experimenting with other ways to keep him fed.

So far Ive tried blanched/sliced cucumber, sinking pleco wafers, and bloodworms and blackworms after lights out. He didnt go for the cucumber or wafers at all and its been nearly impossible to know if he's gotten any of the worms. His tank mate is a 3" juvenile bluegill.

I was just wondering if any of you have this fish and how do you keep him healthy?

heres a link to species:

thanks!

Thanks for the response ABC! I just have a few questions: How do you administer the zucchini?
And how long did it take your pleco to eat sinking foods?
Do you administer everyday?

with the cucumber, I first tried rubber-banding it to a rock by his hideout, but that didnt work. Then I tried using a suction cup clamp to hold it to the wall. That didnt work either.

I think Im going to try some blanched lettuce tonight, wish me luck.

Does anyone else have experience feeding these sorts of plecos?

I have a veggie clip, slice up some zucchini and leave it in the tank and he comes and eats it, I can't remember how long it took before he started to eat sinking foods, but am sure it took a while. I tried giving him cucumber and he ignored it, I think i also gave him spinach once and think he ate some of that.

I have to be honest I don't give my pleco's vegetables anywhere near as often as I should (or would like to) but try to get them vegetables as often as I can. I would like to give him veggies every couple of days, but its usually more like once a week, but again I should give them more often.

Just keep trying and he will eventually come out and eat, my biggest problem with mine is that he is still incredibly shy after at least 18 months of ownership. Which is a shame, because his tail fin looks awesome when you catch a glimpse of him with it spread out.

Both are listed as omnivores. You can try skewering a piece of cooked thawed shrimp and see if maybe he goes for something more meaty.

Thanks guys. I think Ill just keep trying and stay persistent with the feedings.

Ill probably try a zucc next after this cuce is gone, and keep the tank peppered with misc worms after lights out. Cant do much harm, the bluegill is a pretty good worm finder. :)

Thanks again

just to update, I came downstairs this morning and found him stuck to the side of the cucumber. All is well, it just took a while.

Sometimes they don't recognize it as food right away. And sometimes they want to wait until the water really softens it up a lot before they dig in!

i put the zukkini in a bowl of water and micowave it for 1 minute but first i cut it down the center into 2 pieces length wise i use a clip with a suction cup to hold it down close to the bottom i leave it there for about 2 days by then its all eaten or you could stick a dinner fork though it that would hold it down
